When IV sedation may be considered
We consider IV sedation a safe and effective way to help children through dental procedures when other methods are not enough. It may be an option when:
- a child is extremely anxious, fearful or uncooperative even with behavior guidance and gentle techniques;
- extensive or invasive treatment is needed, such as multiple fillings, extractions or other surgical procedures;
- a child has a strong gag reflex, special health care needs or limited ability to tolerate treatment; or
- earlier attempts at treatment were traumatic or unsuccessful.
Least restrictive first
At Kid-1, IV sedation is reserved for situations where less-invasive approaches have been tried and are not appropriate or effective. Those approaches include tell-show-do, positive reinforcement, nitrous oxide, distraction and oral sedation. Our goal is always to use the least restrictive, least invasive method that will keep your child safe and comfortable.
Not every child needs sedation. Your child's dentist will talk through the options with you first.
Comprehensive care in one visit
A dedicated anesthesia team comes to our Casa Grande office 3 or 4 days each month. That allows us to provide comprehensive dental care for a patient in a single visit under IV sedation. Call us to ask about scheduling.
How to get started
Begin with a call or a visit. Your child's dentist will talk with you about the options and answer your questions before any treatment. If you already have a treatment plan from another office and would like another opinion, we offer free second-opinion consultations.
Frequently asked questions
What is IV sedation for children's dental care?
IV (intravenous) sedation is a safe and effective way to help children get dental procedures when other methods are not enough. At Kid-1 we call it dental rehabilitation surgery, and it is provided with a dedicated anesthesia team that comes to our office.
When might my child need IV sedation?
It may be considered when a child is extremely anxious despite gentle techniques, when extensive treatment is needed (multiple fillings, extractions or other procedures), when a child has a strong gag reflex or special health care needs, or when earlier attempts at treatment were unsuccessful.
Is IV sedation the first option?
No. IV sedation is reserved for situations where less-invasive approaches, such as tell-show-do, positive reinforcement, nitrous oxide, distraction or oral sedation, have been tried and are not appropriate or effective. We always aim to use the least restrictive, least invasive method that keeps your child safe and comfortable.
Can all of the treatment be done in one visit?
Because a dedicated anesthesia team comes to our office 3 or 4 days per month, many children can complete comprehensive dental care in a single visit under IV sedation. Call us to ask about scheduling.
