What happens at an emergency visit

First steps while you are on your way
This is the same guidance we share on our FAQ page, based on American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry advice.
- Knocked-out permanent tooth: pick it up by the crown (the white part), not the root. Rinse it gently in cool water without scrubbing or using soap. If you can, put it back in the socket and hold it there with clean gauze or a washcloth. If not, keep it in a clean container with cold milk (or your child's saliva if you have no milk), never in water, and bring your child and the tooth to us right away.
- Knocked-out baby tooth: do not put it back in, because that can harm the developing permanent tooth. Rinse your child's mouth, use gauze for bleeding and a cold compress for swelling, then call us.
- Toothache: if your child can rinse and spit, try warm salt water and gently floss out any trapped food. Use a cold compress on the outside of a swollen cheek. Ask your pediatrician or pharmacist which children's pain reliever and dose is right, and never put aspirin on the tooth or gums.
